Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Bury Festival matinee concert in the beautiful tree-lined Nowton Park was a celebration of his five decades in music. He looked almost the same and certainly sounded the way many of us remembered him. There were plenty of songs from the past, but also new ones which will be appearing on his new album due out in August. His supporting band gave a great boost to the proceedings.

His rendition of Where Peaceful Waters Flow was moving, as are the words in many of his songs including the favourite Clair, one of his biggest-selling singles.

The first half was pretty sedate, but things livened up in the second part with some of the audience abandoning their picnic chairs to jig. Even Gilbert performed standing on top of his keyboard.

Shame when it all ended on this relaxed sunny afternoon.
