Can’t afford a gap year abroad? Sharon Griffiths has a cheaper plan, inspired by a local MP’s idea.
In among his ideas for all school leavers to have a state-funded gap year George Freeman, MP for Mid Norfolk, might have accidentally hit on a wizard wheeze.
For those not wishing to work abroad, he suggested a three-month work placement with a free travel pass.
But why not forget the work placement and just give every school leaver a three-month bus pass instead?
Gap year travellers flit from Thailand to Macchu Picchu but often know precious little of their own country. Not everyone can afford to take a year out to go travelling. Wouldn’t it be a better idea if they could go from Cornwall to Cumbria, Folkestone to Fort William?
True, the Full Moon parties might be a bit more bracing on British beaches but it would be cheaper than round the world, just as interesting and if everything goes wrong, never more than a few hours from home.
We’re increasingly a separate kingdom, divided north and south, London and the rest and that’s before we start on Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Seeing it all by bus might open a few eyes, broaden a few horizons.
Paul Simon wrote a great song about seeing America by Greyhound Bus. Who knows? - one day, we might even get a British version.
