One reader believes less important university subjects should be charged at a higher rate. Do you agree?
The current tuition fee system introduced in 1998 under a Labour Government is patently not working so if differential fees are up for debate by the Tories it should not be based on course costs because something like graphic design will probably cost less than an engineering degree.
We need to be pragmatic about this and like it or not fairness has to take a back seat. The country needs graduates from the more disciplined and rigorous subjects like engineering, science, medicine, law, finance, etc. There is no crying need for graduates in media studies nor experts in 'under water Egyptian basket weaving'.
Some will cry education is a must whatever the subject; including the arts. I agree, but those arguably less important subjects while available should be charged at a higher rate.
Today we are talking essentials and we need to supply the demand.
