Forty years on and Cromer's Seaside Special is at the top of its game and now the only show of its kind in the world.

As someone who has reviewed the shows, broadcast interviews and produced programmes for BBC Radio Norfolk from the theatre my admiration for what's achieved never dims.

Having worked on that stage I know what little space and facilities there are behind the scenes making even more staggering the constantly changing visual spectacle created by long serving ever inventive set designer Ian Westbrook; lighting designer Amanda Hill and costume queen Laura Whyte.

How they do it — and how the cast cope with such swift costume changes — is a theatrical wonder.

At the helm is deviser, director and choreographer Di Cooke whose fresh ideas combine the traditions of Cromer while bringing it well and truly into the 21st century. The contemporary dance routine 'Beyond' accompanied by singing and projected effects is an outstanding example and just one part of this rich mix of variety show once the staple of many seaside resorts and is now lovingly preserved only at Cromer.

The show's the thing rather than big names. But this cast is a perfect team of stars. Seaside Special is a national treasure which has become a heritage attraction. All credit to North Norfolk District council for believing in it and Openwide for so lovingly producing it. For those who like this sort of show it really is entertainment at its very best. Long may it continue.
