A debate has started online about who should be on the back of a new £20 note.
My nomination is Clement Attlee, the Labour Prime Minister, who presided over the post-war government which founded the NHS. This alone in my view puts Attlee head and shoulders above all other contenders.
However Attlee's government secured our place in NATO, delivered Indian independence, while other hostile voices wanted to cling on to the empire. Before all this Attlee was wounded while fighting during World War One and had served as Deputy Prime Minister to Churchill throughout World War Two.
It is time we remembered and celebrated the achievements of our greatest ever peacetime Prime Minister, Clement Attlee.
