Two recent letters to the EDP Agony Uncle have sought an answer to the question, as one expressed it: “How do we even being to comprehend the wickedness of people?”

MORE: Did Jesus wear a red waistcoat?

Well, the writer of Psalm 36, in our bibles, said he had found the answer in a divine revelation: “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

If people who do dreadful deeds realised that they were observed by and answerable to a righteous God, they might hesitate before proceeding.

Is it significant that the increase in the amount and depth of the evil deeds we hear of coincides with the forsaking of our traditional Christian faith, and poor church worship? I think so.

MORE: Let’s not forget the ‘thinking’ as well as the ‘doing’ in life

The minority who do worship find not only forgiveness for the wrong in their lives, but the help of the Holy Spirit to keep things under control and make us aware of the eyes of God observing our conduct.

An ancient prayer acknowledges that: “We have no power of ourselves to help ourselves. Everyone of us needs God-given help.”
