One reader thinks the government should be challenged over Norfolk development. What do you think?

So Norfolk Day is nearly upon us. A chance to celebrate all that is special about our beautiful county.

And also a wonderful opportunity for all true Norfolk citizens to stand together and say no to developers who are so hell-bent on concreting over our countryside.

No to our councils who tiptoe around those more powerful and no to that faceless department in central government who override all our objections.

This is supposed to be a democratic country and we are tired of fighting for our tiny communities set within our skylark fields when we know we are sure to lose the battle.

Norfolk is an agricultural county and its wild, rural beauty with so much precious wildlife is a huge draw for tourists. What is the point of destroying it?

Already, our once fine city and small market towns have been lost to a never ending ugly sprawl with swathes of soulless housing estates of huge proportions and new, fume filled roads rapidly marching across the land.

And now the recent report in the paper detailing plans for a new town in Mid-Norfolk. What? It is time to start a serious campaign to change the law. An online government petition perhaps? To give local people with local knowledge the final say in planning matters and to let them decide where small homes for first time buyers will sit comfortably in the their landscape.

This is not nimbyism – just plain common sense. So please don't let Norfolk Day disappear in a blink of 24 hours. We do different in Norfolk so let's be the first county to challenge the government.
