Archant

Opinion: Prue Leith certainly cooked up a proper Bake Off clanger this week. But it's easily done, says Rachel Moore

Poor, poor Prue.

As a serial blurter, whose mouth runs riot before the brain catches up, I wanted to hug Prue Leith when I heard she had let the name of the Bake Off winner out of the bag hours before the final.

What a ninny.

Her excuse was that she was in a different time zone in Bhutan when she tweeted the winner’s name. No excuse – just keep away from social media.

Fans said she had “ruined” the Bake Off final. She was left “mortified” and “in too much of a state to talk about it.”

It was an error of epic proportions for the new judge of the first Channel 4 series. “Oh Prue,” as @anitathetweeter tweeted in response.

It just shows how one second of carelessness on social media can ruin months of hard work for the production team and enjoyment for viewers.

But, considering all these TV finals are filmed months in advance, it’s a modern miracle that the cats do manage to remain hidden in the bag until the final viewing.
