People across the region have been blown away this week by the sight of spectacular rainbows in the sky.
The meteorological phenomenon has occurred at various points throughout the week but some of the most stunning sightings came yesterday afternoon with a double rainbow forming over parts of the region.
Rainbows are created by both reflection and refraction of light in water droplets in the atmosphere, which results in a spectrum of light appearing. They are in fact a full circle of light but due to most people viewing a rainbow on the ground we only see a semi-circle or the arc of the rainbow.
A double rainbow is then formed when there are two reflections inside the raindrops. However, the sun also needs to be at a low angle for the double rainbow to appear.
