The Heart of Norfolk resounded to the sound of a record breaking visitor on the weekend.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch the prototype High Speed Train power car and matching carriages on the Mid Norfolk Railway. Services operated on the 12-mile Wymondham to Dereham line, courtesy of the 125 Group and the National Railway Museum.

MNR commercial director James Steward said: 'It was absolutely fantastic. In the 1970s British Rail built hundreds of these 125s and they are still operating today.'

Developed by the British Rail Derby Technical Centre with its futuristic design created by Sir Kenneth Grange, the prototype HST was built in 1972 and was formed of two lightweight but powerful diesel locomotives positioned at either end of a set of coaches. On June 12, 1973, the prototype HST set the world record for diesel traction when it reached 143mph.
