A piece of wartime Christmas cake belonging to Winston Churchill is among the latest batch of items linked to the legendary statesman.

The festive morsel from 1945, which is in a sealed tin, joins cigars and a damaged breakfast sugar bowl at an auction in Norfolk this week.

They are bits of 'Churchilliana' which have been sent for sale at Keys saleroom in Aylsham after previous high profile auctions of memorabilia from the inspirational prime minister including some spare false teeth which fetched more than 15,000.

Specialist valuer Andrew Bullock said: ''Anything directly linked to Churchill has value.

'Yet again we have got some unusual items. People love the weird and wacky, especially if they think they might be getting something no-one else has got.

He was fascinated by some of the items collected by Churchill's personal projectionist, which were being sold by his sons, including the broken sugar bowl, which was glued back together by his butler.

'How it got broken we don't know. But Churchill was famed for his temper and I can imagine him receiving news of one of many backward steps the nation suffered during the war and venting his anger on the nearest object,' he explained.

There is also a packet of leaded glass shards from a House of Commons committee room which suffered damaged during an air raid in May 1941 and were picked up by the enterprising projectionist.

Three personalised unsmoked cigars are accompanied by three part-smoked cigars – one of which is reputed to have been discarded when the PM received the startling news that Nazi deputy leader Rudolf Hess had baled out of an aircraft over Scotland.

One of the unsmoked cigars has a V for Victory band, which is something Mr Bullock has not encountered before.

Highest prices of up to 5000 are expected to be fetched by two books written and signed by Churchill.

A personal cigar box given to a policeman at Churchill's country home Chartwell could make 1,000 at the sale on Thursday March 24 which also includes signed pictures and photographs.

The catalogue is available online at www.keysauctions.co.uk Viewing is on Wednesday March 23 9am to 7pm or on the morning of the sale from 8.30-10am.
