A plaque commemorating Polish involvement at the Battle of Britain base will be unveiled in its memorial garden on April 28 by Stefan Gabszewicz .

His late father was Group Capt Aleksander Gabszewicz, a commanding officer of the base in 1946 during the time when it was transferred to the Polish Air Force and became RAF Coltishall (Polish).

Stefan Gabszewicz, from Oxfordshire, has not visited the base since he lived there as a boy. He will make the journey to Norfolk with his wife Tessa, who is the daughter of another Polish airman who served at the base, Zbigniew Kobierzycki.

The couple will be given a tour of the station, which closed in 2010, after first visiting the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum at Neatishead, which houses a collection of RAF Coltishall memorabilia.

And they will also visit the military cemetery at Scottow where Polish pilot Tadeusz Symanski is buried.

The event has been organised by the Spirit of Coltishall Association (SoCA), set up to preserve memories of the base.

SoCA chairman Dave Welsh said he hoped the Polish plaque would be the first of a series honouring all nations whose personnel served at the station in wartime.

The ceremony, led by SoCA chaplain Rev Elizabeth Bailey, will also see wreaths laid by Mr Welsh, and Richard Kornicki, chairman of the Polish Memorial Association.

'The plaque will be a small instalment to pay off that debt of gratitude which we owe,' said Mr Welsh.
