My archive pictures this week feature west Norfolk seaside towns Wells and Hunstanton, but focus on the towns themselves rather than out to sea.

2. The high street at Hunstanton in July 1980 was looking up. A new weekly market was mooted for the town and the Chamber of Trade had begun lighting up the town centre during the summer evenings. A couple of empty shops had been taken over and the town was due to have its first travel agency.

6. Stopping for a mardle on the high street at Wells in the autumn sunlight of early November, 1957. The high street had just been described as 'finished' as a shopping centre at a recent Valuation Court.

7. The new police station at Wells, complete with bobby on his bike in October, 1962. The old red brick station on Church Plain had been in use for 71 years but was now redundant and had been replaced with this smart new HQ on Polka Road which boasted two constables' houses. Sgt Cyril Haste and three police constables made up the force at Wells.

10. The International Stores on the corner of Staithe Street in late September, 1979. The store was due to close after 70 years. The closure of the store formed part of a wider picture of shop closures at Wells, five having closed the previous year. The store manager Michael Scoles had worked there for 19 years and Miss Betty Parker was a familiar face in the store where she had worked for 31 years.
