With many employees denied pay increases of late despite working long hours, there are certainly lots of people out there who think they deserve a salary rise. Councillors, it seems, feel the same.

Norfolk County Council leader Cliff Jordan has spoken frankly about how he believes he and his fellow elected representatives are “not well paid” and deserve more.

His views may attract little sympathy from those in a similar situation who are not even getting the luxury of a review into what they earn. They will be even more unpalatable to people who see Mr Jordan and his fellow councillors cutting services such as bus services for rural communities on the one hand, yet asking for a pay increase on the other.

An independent panel’s decision to freeze allowances resolves the issue for now. Let’s see if that changes.
