The obesity epidemic engulfing the country is concerning - but it is even more worrying when it is children who are affected.

Evidence shows if a child remains overweight or obese when they stop growing, it will be much harder to lose that weight as an adult.

And with junk food adverts, the cheap price of unhealthy options, and more sedentary lifestyles, it appears to be the way many children are heading.

While there are many changes society should make to ensure our children and more active, it is essential parents take some responsibility in the battle against the bulge.

Making sure our children are fit, active, and healthy is a duty we must all take very seriously.

This newspaper is trying to do its bit by teaming up with Sports for Schools to offer primary and infant schools the chance to win their share of £20,000 worth of sports equipment.

Many schools from across Norfolk and Waveney have already signed up to take part in this year's Sports for Schools scheme, and tokens can be collected in this newspaper and its sister titles until April 14.

But when industry experts say they are worried about our children - and both the physical and mental affects obesity can have on them - it is time to sit up, listen, and make some changes.

The statistics are shocking and it is about time action was taken to make sure our children have the best possible futures.
