Safety and suitability of rental properties to be ensured under new landlord licence

Breckland Council is encouraging district landlords to apply for a new licence in order to ensure houses in the area are fit for purpose.
From October, landlords of any residential rental properties which have two or more households, and a total of five people or more, will need to apply for a house in multiple occupation (HMO) mandatory licence.
As part of the licence application Breckland Council will ensure the home is suitable for the number of people proposed and the landlord is a fit and proper person to run the property.
The council will also ensure that the bedrooms are a minimum size and the property complies with household waste and recycling procedures.
Cllr Gordon Bambridge, executive member for growth for Breckland Council commented: “In recent years there has been a growth in the multiple occupancy homes across the UK, including in Breckland, so it is important that we make sure they are correctly licensed and are appropriate for the number of tenants.”
