Date set for annual Burston Strike School Rally

Details of this year's Burston Strike School Rally have been announced.

The event, which commemorates the longest strike in British history, will take place on September 4, between 11am and 4.30pm.

Guest speakers will be Diana Holland, assistant general secretary at Unite, Dave Carr, frontline NHS worker, Kelvin Hopkins, Labour MP for Luton, and student activist Mary Robinson.

During the rally crowds will be entertained by political groups such as Red Flagg, Robb Johnson and The Irregulars, and poet John Hegley.

The annual event mark the struggles of teachers, Tom and Kitty Higdon, who set up a rival school in Burston in April 1914 after being dismissed from the Church of England county school because of their union connections. The strike lasted until August 1939.
