Shocked witnesses have described the moment a car smashed through a fence and plunged down an embankment in Norwich.
The vehicle, thought to be a Volkswagen Golf, had been travelling down Rouen Road at around 5.30pm today when it lost control.
It flattened a metal guard rail on the corner of Normans Buildings, before going down a 16ft embankment and crashing into a small wall.
Emergency services said the driver was able to exit the vehicle unaided, but he was later treated by paramedics at the scene.
Tony Wright, 69, saw the crash while he was waiting in his car outside the Richard Nash City Centre Showroom.
He said: 'How he got out of that car I have no idea. There was a loud bang as he hit the fence and all the people in the [walk-in] clinic came out screaming.
'There was a couple who stopped to light a cigarette just before they crossed the road, and if they hadn't the car would have gone straight into them.'
Fire crews from Carrow and Sprowston were called to the scene at 5.32pm.
But station manager Joe Warns said firefighters did not need to free the driver.
Kevin Haynes, who lives in the flats next to the scene, said: 'I live on the fifth floor and heard a bang and thought it was an earthquake.'
