The holder of one of the city's oldest civic posts is to host an event celebrating its newest businesses.

Richard Marks, the Sheriff of Norwich, is expecting to welcome more than 100 of the city's youngest start-ups to a reception being held on Thursday evening at John Lewis – where Mr Marks' day job is as head of branch.

The invitation-only evening will include speeches from Karen Jones, the chancellor of the University of East Anglia and founder of Cafe Rouge, digital entrepreneur Steffan Aquarone, and Paul Coby, chief information office for the John Lewis Partnership.

Mr Marks said: 'Given my business background, I wanted to bring some focus to the number of new businesses we have in Norwich. I have organised this reception because I want to raise a glass to the fact that Norwich is doing really well.'

He said he had invited businesses under two years old from sectors across the city, including tech and retail.
