A butcher took home the bacon after claiming three gold awards at a national competition.

Jamie Archer, of Archer’s Butchers in Plumstead Road, Norwich, won the prizes for his products at the Smithfield Awards, held by the Q Guild of Butchers.

His whiskey cured streaky bacon, Italian porchetta and pork hock and black pudding pie scooped top awards while he also won a silver for his Norfolk Nobbler sausages.

The artisan butchery competition has 18 categories and is judged by a blind test.

Q Guild of Butchers chairman Mark Turnbull said: “The Smithfield Awards are always a celebration of butchers who are the top of their game, combining traditional skills and knowledge with innovation; great taste with immaculate sourcing. The 2018 award winners demonstrate this superbly. These butchers are custodians of a proud tradition of local artisan butchery and I’m delighted to celebrate their success.”
