Shoppers have been urged to get behind an annual grassroots campaign to promote the UK's small businesses.

Small Business Saturday – which falls on December 2 this year – aims to celebrate the contribution of the UK's 5.5 million small companies, many of whom are encouraging consumers to shop locally on the day by holding special events and offering discounts.

Norwich North MP Chloe Smith's endorsement comes after she visited small firms around her constituency to hear about the challenges they face.

During an event organised by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) she met staff at Norwich Glass Company, H Tech Styling and Kerrisons Toys.

Ms Smith said: 'A switch to buying from a small local business can do great things for our city.'
