The Norwich branch of Italian chain Carluccio’s has been named among the restaurants at risk of closure its in restructuring programme.

It revealed on Thursday it could close up to 34 of its 103 stores as it looked to cut costs.

A spokesman said: “We have had to take the very difficult decision to potentially close our Chelmsford and Norwich sites due to rising business costs and unsustainable rental levels, but are open to entering constructive discussions with the landlords to reach new, mutually agreeable terms.”

Carluccio’s has called in advisers from KPMG, who said that falling consumer confidence, increasing competition and rises in the cost of labour, raw materials, rent and business rates were behind the decision.

The Chelmsford restaurant is also at risk, though branches in Bury St Edmunds, Colchester and Cambridge are unaffected.
