The Beechwood, in North Walsham, won the hearts of guests in the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice 2017 awards.

The hotel, run by husband and wife team Hugh and Emma Asher, is lauded by praise in page after page of almost 750 online reviews.

The couple, who bought The Beechwood in 2015, expressed delight at the accolade.

'It means a lot to us - we get an immense sense of pride to see guests returning to the hotel,' said Mr Asher. 'And have tremendous satisfaction from people saying how great the hotel is.

'The bedrooms are very romantic with four-poster beds and roll top baths and we try to provide fantastic service and atmosphere.'

From the mid-1930s to 1967 The Beechwood was known as The Shrubs and was the home of Drs Peter and Margaret McLeod who were close friends of crime writer Agatha Christie.

Dame Agatha was a regular visitor, staying with the McLeods in room number 9 for a month at a time, writing her novels in a summerhouse in the grounds.

The world famous author would travel incognito to the town using the surname of her husband Sir Max Mallowan.
