Martin Myerscough, founder of Frugalpac which is based at Brightwell, near Ipswich, is on a mission to improve the UK’s recycling rates.
The Future50 firm has ambitious plans to build on its initial success in developing a genuinely recyclable coffee cup – following the revelation that many disposable cups believed by consumers to be recylable end up in landfill.
In October, MPs on the environment audit committee were told that consumers in the UK use 2.5 billion of the cups every year, with just 1% of them recycled.
“Instead of getting frustrated and saying that someone should do something about it, our approach was to do something about it,” says Mr Myerscough. “Now we have also developed a recyclable juice carton.”
The Frugalpac cup can be recycled along with paper while the carton, unveiled only in October, involves an inner foil bag and an outer paperboard shell which can be easily separated.
Of the company’s selection for the Future50, Mr Myerscough said: “It is very exciting. It is a great accolade for the business.”
