The 2018 Suffolk Show brought two days of perfect weather this week – and some notable victories in the livestock rings.

In the beef interbreed competition, Norfolk farmers Anita Padfield and Paul Barwood, of Fleggburgh, near Great Yarmouth, celebrated the supreme champion title for the third year in a row with Burnbank Jenny, with calf at foot.

'It's the third year in succession the same animal has won interbreed champion so I'm absolutely delighted,' said Anita, who was also celebrating other successes in the interbreed competitions with wins in the pairs and threes.

There was also unexpected success in the sheep show ring for the Jones family, from Wymondham, winning the Stephen Cobbald interbreed championship.

Andrew Jones, with his Hampshire Down breed champion shearling ram, took the title despite stiff competition from a variety of rare and pedigree breed champions.

The Jones family almost didn't make it, putting off their summer holiday by a couple of days to compete at the showground at Trinity Park, near Ipswich.

Andrew Jones said: 'We are ecstatic. We came with no expectations. We were going to go on holiday, but brought seven sheep to compete here instead.

'We will be on the 6 o'clock ferry to France for our holiday in the South of France.'

The family's Morley Flock is based at Wymondham where they have 40 ewes.

Mr Jones added: 'I have had Hampshires for several years. This is the second time we have had a flock.'

This winning ram won his breed championship here last year, as a lamb, he explained.

Marian Jones added: 'This is our first show out. We usually do Suffolk, Leicestershire, Norfolk and Yorkshire.

'Normally our daughters Annabel, 18, and Eleanor, 21, would show them. These are their sheep, but they both have exams and can't be here.

'They will be surprised. Annabel has A-levels and Eleanor has university end-of-year examinations.'

In the dairy section, the overall winner was Easthaugh Audrey 70 from Designer Holsteins, shown by Peter Prior, of Radley Green, near Chelmsford.
