The National Sprayer Testing Scheme has achieved another excellent result for the year despite falling just short of its target.

Manager Duncan Russell said: "The 80pc of sprayed area target was always going to be a big one, but having achieved 75.9pc (95pc) of target) is a good result. Farmers have supported NSTS and agreed its accurate application and environmental benefits."

Having tested 8800 sprayers during the year, the scheme found that four out of 10 machines tested achieved the standard required without the need for repair or rectifying. Of those with problems, the main reasons were leaks, drips and worn or damaged nozzles.

The NSTS is now a requirement for the major crop assurance schemes and Mr Russell predicted a further increase in the number of sprayers being offered for test.
