Enthusiasts gathered despite the chill at Roudham, near Thetford, where Malcolm Stammers’s 1948 single-cylinder Field Marshall 2 and its stable-mates came under the hammer.

Sale organiser Peter Love said: “Mr Stammers has sold his collection very well. We had a world record price for a Field Marshall, it went for £14,500.”

He added a 1965 International also fetched a world record winning bid of £7,500.

“Usually they’re very difficult to sell,” he added. “People didn’t like them, they weren’t a popular tractor.”

Mr Stammers, 82, said he did not yet know what the sale had raised or what he would do with the proceeds.

“I never thought about it,” he said. “I just got too old to carry on and that was that. I very impressed by the turn-out. There was a lot of people there considering the weather.”
