Norfolk's jobless figures fell for the third month in a row in May, according to figures published yesterday.

The number claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in the county fell by 385 and stood at 11,753. This took the unemployment rate to 2.4pc.

The district breakdown for the county was: Breckland 1,477 (-73), Broadland 882

(-38), North Norfolk 1,042

(-39), Norwich 3,151 (-43), South Norfolk 905 (-73), West Norfolk 1,843 (-32) and Yarmouth 2,453 (-87).

Suffolk saw a fall of 199 to 8,292, with Waveney down 73 to 2,184 and Forest Heath down 31 to 417.

The number of jobless people in Cambridgeshire rose by 192 to 5,358, with Fenland rising 58 to 1,285.

Nationally, the number of people out of work increased by more than 70,000 in three months to reach the highest level since September 2002.

The Office for National Statistics said the unemploy-ment rate was 5.3pc in the three months to April, bringing the number of people out of work to 1.61 million.
