Ethics a top priority for younger workers says study

Most young workers would quit a job if their employer went against their principles, a study has found.

Research by jobs site Glassdoor showed that almost three out of four 18 to 24-year-olds would be prepared to resign if their company did something they did not believe in.

Fewer than half of people over 55 would leave their job in similar circumstances, according to a survey of 1,000 workers.

David Whitby of Glassdoor said: “Young people in the workforce today make it their business to be informed about an employer’s culture, corporate social activities and attitude to social and political issues.

“They aren’t just looking for a job, they are looking to align themselves with an organisation that shares their values and beliefs.

“Employers have to realise that offering a good salary package is no longer enough to attract the best talent, they also need to demonstrate that they have a conscience and act responsibly.

“They must offer a clear mission and a strong culture that engages employees and candidates.”
