The public sector in the East of England lost 40,295 workers between 2009 and 2016, new figures reveal.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), analysed by the GMB union, shows a drop of 8.3% in the number of people employed in the public sector across the region’s 47 district and borough councils.

Waveney saw the biggest drop in public sector employment in the East in the period (43.5%) while four other Suffolk local authorities – including Forest Heath (31%) and Suffolk Coastal (24.8%) – are in the top 10.

Norwich saw the biggest decrease in its public sector workforce in Norfolk (18.8%), followed by Broadland (12.9%).

The decrease in public sector workers across Great Britain in the same period was 10.3%, or 606,260 staff.

GMB regional secretary Warren Kenny said: “It is not possible to reduce public sector employment on this scale without damaging vital public services.”
