One of Cromer's busiest stores could be closed for more than two months, it has emerged.

The Co-op has confirmed it is set to takeover the town centre Budgens store.

It says the move would safeguard local jobs, with 23 staff employed in the food outlet and five at the in-house Post Office transferring over.

However, posters put up in store this week revealed that Budgens will close on Tuesday, February 21, at 4pm.

And staff revealed the store was not expected to reopen until May.

The announcement reads: 'In the lead up to the closure we apologise for any inconvenience caused with the limited range and availability you may experience.

'The Post Office will remain open but will only be accessible through the temporary entrance from the Budgens car park side of the building.'

The takeover is subject to the approval of the Competition and Markets Authority.

The Co-op in High Street, Cromer, is not linked to the Central England Co-operative in Middlebrook Way, Cromer.

Alistair Smith, acquisition manager for the Co-op in the region, said: 'Last year, the Co-op opened more than 100 new stores and we plan to open a similar amount in 2017. Subject to approval, we look forward to the opportunity to serve the Cromer community.'
