Debbie Cowley, 48, began baking celebration cakes part-time in 2010 while working in an accounts department.

After being made redundant a few years later, Mrs Cowley jumped at the chance to turn her hobby into a full-time business and launched Sassa’s Bespoke Cakes.

Eight years on and Mrs Cowley’s husband, Giles, has joined the business, providing administrative support, while her daughter Kayleigh, also helps create cake pops as well as cupcakes and some wedding cakes.

The response to their work, they said, has been phenomenal.

“We are very proud that after years of creating wedding cakes from home we have finally moved into a dedicated premises,” said Mrs Cowley. “Following a busy couple of months transforming what was a hairdressers salon into our showroom and work space, we opened on May 13.”

She added: “It was a great success, we had hardly opened the door when people started to arrive!”
