A blanket of low cloud over Norfolk Showground did not dim the spirits of visitors to the Royal Norfolk Show's grand ring.
Crowds gathered in the grandstands, on the grass and by the railings surrounding the arena yesterday to watch a colourful pageantry of showjumping, brass bands and cavalry.
While some visitors were disappointed not to see the RAF Falcons, who had to cancel their jumps due to the weather, they enjoyed many other spectacles.
In the morning the Band of the Parachute Regiment, marching in formation, played on brass and percussion instruments a selection of rousing compositions, including the Superman movie theme.
In sunnier conditions that uplifting number would have been the perfect introduction to the next act, the RAF Falcons.
However, the low cloud scuppered those plans,
As the band wrapped up, spectators looked skyward, wondering if the parachutists were there, or if they would drop at all.
Their questions were answered when Flt Lit Ash Grey-Smart, jump coordinator, entered the arena and announced: "Unfortunately we've got a bit of bad news.
"If you look to the skies you'll see a lot of low cloud, it is not safe for the team to jump. Sorry to disappoint you for now," he added.
Although there were hopes the Falcons would drop in during the evening, the low cloud put paid to that too.
With a better weather forecast for today, they should be jumping at 11am and 6.15pm.
A highlight was an exhibition of work horses followed by musical ride by the Household Cavalry mounted regiment.
Cavalrymen wore uniforms in the style of the 19th century, delighting the crowd with well-executed military manoeuvres.
At the end of the pageant the riders saluted the High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Clare Margaret Agnew.
Later a fleet of Rolls Royce cars took spectators on a trip through the history of the vehicle, from 1898 to the present.
The National Farmers Union Norfolk and the Norfolk Young Farmers celebrated their 100th anniversary with a pageant.
