To celebrate Heritage Open Days 2017, a range of events and exhibitions are taking place across Norfolk. Here's our pick of the bunch...
• Learn more about Norfolk's pub history at The Fat Cat Brewery Tap
The Fat Cat Brewery Tap has a rich history and is home to an interesting collection of Norfolk pub memorabilia. This event highlights the importance of public houses and breweries as sites of cultural heritage and will take place between 12noon-11pm on Friday, September 8, 11am-11pm on Saturday, September 9 and 11am-10.30pm on Sunday, September 9.
• Visit somewhere you wouldn't usually be allowed to go, The Cathedral of St John The Baptist
The Cathedral of St John The Baptist are offering an exclusive chance to visit places not usually open to the public, ranging from some of the upper reaches of the Cathedral down to the lower depths. The tour lasts one hour and requires climbing stairs, appropriate clothing and footwear is advised. Tours should be pre-booked online and take place on Saturday, September 9 at 11am, 12.30pm, 2.00pm, 2.30pm and on Sunday, September 10 at 12.30pm and 2.00pm.
• Discover more about the Broadland's heritage at the Museum of the Broads
Visit Broadland's only waterside museum on its 21st birthday and enjoy their Broadland in Pictures exhibition to see how the landscape has inspired artists, photographers and holiday-makers through the ages, take part in the interactive WWII rescue from the skies or board a wherry yacht. Activities will take place on September 9-10 between 10am and 4pm.
• Enjoy a guided walk at St Benet's Abbey
Guided walks are taking place on Saturday, September 9 between Ludham Bridge and St Benet's Abbey. Attendees will be able to discover more about medieval life at the Abbey, learn how monks changed the Broadland landscape and enjoy picturesque views. The walk is approximately three miles in distance and takes place at 10am and again at 2pm, weather permitting.
• Meet the medieval armourer at Castle Motte in Thetford
Head to Castle Park on Saturday, September 9 between 12.00pm and 3pm to meet the medieval armourer and find out about weapons used by soldiers defending the Castle. Have your face painted as a Normal soldier or warrior queen and learn about the history of the site on a guided tour.
• Uncover more about Norwich's manufacturing city heritage at City Bookshop
In association with authors Frances and Michael Holmes, an exhibition is being held at City Bookshop on Saturday (9am-5.15pm) and Sunday (11am-4.30pm). The event will be showing glimpses into Norwich life during a particularly eventful period. Learn more about Norwich as a manufacturing city, where roads were dominated by bicycles, war-damaged buildings were being repaired and the Samson and Hercules Ballroom rocked to big band sounds.
• Stop by The City Club
Did you know there was a private gentlemens' club at Bacon House, Colegate, founded in 1897? The building dates from around 1560 and features wonderful old beams and panels. A club is situated on the first floor. The building will be open September 9-10 from 11am until 4pm for you to take a look at.
• See the city from new heights at Kett's Hill
Guided tours of one of Norwich's best kept secrets will be on offer on Saturday and Sunday. Visit the place where Robert Kett and his 10,000 followers besieged the city in 1549 and follow the labyrinthine paths and steps around the site as part of the tour, until finally reaching the stunning panoramic view of the city. Tours take place, 10.30am and 3pm on Saturday, September 9 and at 2pm on Sunday, September 10.
• Learn about a gruesome murder at one of Norwich's most historic pubs
The Murderers on Timber Hill will be revealing all about the grisly tale behind its name, with a display and documentary about its diverse history and previous landlords. Visit here between 11.30am and 4.30pm over the weekend to find out more.
• Discover the links between Ancient House and the last Maharajah of the Punjab
Visit Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life on Saturday, September 9 between 10am and 5pm to discover the links between the house and the last Maharajah of the Punjab, Duleep Singh. The exhibition explores Singh's life in India, his relationship with Queen Victoria and his life as a country gentleman.
