Review: Roger Haywood is entralled by the drama Kindertransport, at the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich

A fictitious play based on frightening reality proved to be one of the most moving evenings I have experienced at the theatre.
The play focuses on a time in November 1938 when the British government decided to take action after Nazi violence against Jews across Germany and Austria. The Kindertransport programme offered Jewish children safe passage to the UK. More than 10,000 were sent to safety to Britain and other countries.
A young Eva Schlesinger, daughter of Helga and Werner, is sent away to live with a foster carer in Manchester. This is expected to be temporary until her parents find work and move to England too. Eva gradually loses her Jewish roots as the years pass. Blending reality and fantasy, some of which is horrific, the play offers high-level emotion. It is certainly superbly acted by a highly talented small cast. and brilliantly directed by Tony Fullwood, from the original script by Diane Samuels.
