Departed duo Garth Good and Pete Brassett have had their say on their departures from Downham Town.

First-team boss Good and his assistant Brassett resigned over an 'internal dispute' before failing to clear the air at an emergency board meeting last Thursday.

The Thurlow Nunn First Division outfit – who lost 2-0 at Fakenham Town on Saturday under reserve-team management – released an official statement last week saying the pair had mutually agreed to leave, something Good disputes.

He said: 'We wanted to resolve the matter and we didn't want to leave. But the issue couldn't be sorted so both parties had to go their separate ways.

'The club also said the matter was down to player policy. This implies something had been written down. It hasn't. There is no policy. Yet on Saturday, this so-called policy issue didn't matter when a squad was picked.

'Either way, I don't want to get into a slanging match. I'm very proud of what we've done as the club was in a state when we arrived. Us and the committee both want the same thing, success, but we just want to get there in different ways. I wish Downham all the best.'

Brassett, who arrived with Good two and a half years ago, said he was still 'shocked' to no longer be at the club.

He said: 'We were heading in the right direction and the club was on the up. It's all been very upsetting. We had no money, no budget, but we'd turned Downham around. The man who needs real thanks is Garts (Martin Saddleton). He's been at the club for almost 20 years and done it all in a number of roles. On behalf of me and Garth I want to thank him.

'I also want to thank everyone personally, including the players and the committee, for giving me the chance at the age of 23. It's a shame we couldn't finish the job we started.'

After Brassett's interview, a club spokesman contacted the paper to make public the committee's appreciation of Garts and Carlton Haynes' service – and to confirm they are still looking for a manager.

Downham host table-topping Newmarket on Saturday – a week after the league leaders edged out fellow high-fliers Swaffham Town thanks to two late goals.

Paul Hunt, whose side lost 2-1 despite Rory Harper's opener and visit Braintree Reserves at the weekend, said: 'It was mixed emotions. The game was won and lost on tiny margins. We did everything but put the ball in the net for a second. You couldn't legislate for their two goals. We were so unlucky but I'm very proud of our efforts.'

Premier Division Wisbech, who visit Thackley in the FA Vase third round on Saturday, lost 1-0 at home to Dereham. Lynn Reserves, who visit Ryhall, beat Farcet 6-0 thanks to goals from Chez Rust (2), Kyran Stannard, Nelson Moreira, Luis Duarte and Ciaran Beales to stay top of Peterborough Div One.

In Anglian Combination Division Six, Ben Swales and Steve Fisher struck as Redgate Rangers won 2-1 at Thorpe Village Reserves. Lee Ballard (2) and Isaac Bloodworth scored as Gayton United Reserves beat Caister A to make it four North West Norfolk teams in the Norfolk Primary Cup quarter-finals.
