Aston Oxborough is relishing the added responsibility of becoming Norwich City Under-23s captain, as he provides cover for the first team.

With Remi Matthews and Paul Jones both allowed out on loan for the rest of the season, the 19-year-old is third choice behind Angus Gunn and Michael McGovern.

Head coach Daniel Farke has said that Oxborough will train with the first team – although emergency keeper loans are available outside transfer windows in the event of an injury crisis.

Matt Gill then handed the keeper the captain's armband ahead of Monday's 3-1 win away to Stoke in Division Two of Premier League Two, following Adam Phillips' loan move to Cambridge United.

'I was very pleased to captain the team,' Oxborough said. 'Adam has gone on loan to Cambridge so it was nice to step in for him.

'I had a spell when I captained the under-16s so I had a little bit of an understanding of what to do. Obviously captaining the under-23s is a lot bigger but I'm really pleased.'

He continued: 'It was a good result. We made it a bit hard for ourselves but we got there in the end. We had to be organised and disciplined and put our bodies on the line.

'We defended the goal really well and deserved to win. Joe (Crowe) helped sitting in front of the back four and he gave us good protection alongside Timi (Odusina) and Wallo (Owen Wallis).'

City's U23s stretched their unbeaten run to four matches with the win at St George's Park, thanks to goals from Todd Cantwell, Pierre Fonkeu and Devonte Aransibia.

The Potters were reduced to 10 men five minutes before the break and proved a physical opposition for Gill's team to deal with, whose contract is due to expire in the summer, but with City retaining the option of a further year.

'If we make the step up to the first-team we need that physicality and it's only going to get more physical as we move up,' the former England U16 keeper added, speaking to City's website.

'We've carried our run over from Christmas and that's four unbeaten run. We need to maintain it and keep on going and hopefully we'll start pushing up the league.'
