Norwich City will travel to fellow Championship side Brentford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The draw was made in China at the controversial time of 4.15am earlier today, with the EFL defending their decision to hold the draw when most supporters were still asleep.

Round three features 16 ties, with the Premier League teams in European action entering the competition, which will be played in the week commencing Monday, September 18.

For the Canaries the trip to Griffin Park will be between league games away at newly promoted Sheffield United on Saturday, September 16 and a Carrow Road clash with Bristol City on Saturday, September 23.

Brentford comfortably survived in the Championship last season, finishing two places behind Norwich, although six points further back in 10th.

However Dean Smith’s side have made a bad start to the current campaign, picking up just one point from four games, in a 2-2 home draw with Bristol City.

The Bees are due to travel to Carrow Road for league action on Friday, December 22, with the return fixture in west London on Saturday, January 27.

City were held to a 0-0 draw away from home on New Year’s Eve by the Bees last season but also romped to a 5-0 home success earlier in December 2016.

In the EFL Cup last season Norwich impressively won 2-0 away to Premier League side Everton in the third round, before losing on penalties at Leeds in the fourth round, but the current campaign saw the club enter in the first round for the first time since 2009.

Daniel Farke’s side began with a 3-2 home win over League Two side Swindon Town and followed that up earlier this week with another Carrow Road success, beating League One side Charlton Athletic 4-1 on Tuesday.

Brentford needed extra-time to beat League One side AFC Wimbledon in round one but eased to a much more impressive 4-1 win away to local rivals QPR in round two this week.

The clubs have met twice in the League Cup previously, City winning 4-1 at home in the fourth round in 1991/92 but losing 1-0 away in the first round in 2001/02 when the Bees were playing a level below them in the third tier.

In total the Canaries have travelled to Brentford on 27 occasions in all competition since their first visit in October 1920, winning seven and drawing four, giving the Bees the upper hand with 16 wins.

Overall the teams have played each other 53 times though and Norwich have the edge, winning 23 and drawing nine, to Brentford’s 21 victories.

Griffin Park has a capacity of around 12,500 and ticket details are yet to be confirmed.
