It wasn't quite a repeat of the extremely busy summer transfer window of 2017 but January 2018 was still far busier than supporters were expecting.

The Canaries confirmed their first business of the window as early as December 19, when defender Marcel Franke's loan return to Germany was announced, joining Dynamo Dresden until the end of the campaign.

Two loan extensions were also confirmed before the Christmas decorations were taken down, midfielder Ben Godfrey and keeper Remi Matthews having their League One experiences continued with Shrewsbury and Plymouth respectively in late December.

The first arrival came on January 3 with an addition to the under-23 squad, Republic of Ireland Under-19 winger Simon Power being signed from University College Dublin AFC.

On the same day another young prospect went out on loan, U23s captain Adam Phillips joining League Two side Cambridge for the remainder of the season.

January 4 brought two further loan announcements – out of 13 in total – when young defender Michee Efete extended his stay at National League strugglers Torquay and back-up goalkeeper Paul Jones returned to former club Exeter City – with players due to be out of contract this summer.

Similar deals followed on January 9 for two young players whose deals are also expiring. Midfielder Ebou Adams headed for the National League with Leyton Orient and keeper Jake Hallett, who City have a one-year option for, joined Mildenhall on a short-term loan in the fourth tier of non-league.

The serious business really kicked in on January 12 though, with two high-profile exits.

That was when fit-again playmaker Alex Pritchard's much-talked-about switch to Premier League club Huddersfield went through, for a reported initial £11million, and changed the complexion of the business City could afford.

Yanic Wildschut – a deadline day signing in a deal worth up to £7m the previous January – was also shipped out after falling out of favour Daniel Farke, joining Championship promotion chasers Cardiff City on loan.

The first major arrival of the window soon followed, with prodigious Tottenham talent Marcus Edwards arriving on loan the next day, before another considerable chunk was removed from the wage bill.

Club captain Russell Martin's expected exit was sealed on January 16 when he joined Rangers on loan, having not played since August, with another experienced head soon following.

It was striker Cameron Jerome to head for the exit door next, City's top scorer of the 2014-15 promotion season joining promotion-chasing Derby County for an initial £1.5m having fallen out of favour.

It was all about Scotland for the next two deals, with big earner Steven Naismith's loan destination settling on Hearts, before the Canaries made another addition.

Scotland international midfielder Kenny McLean was signed from Aberdeen on January 22, with City reportedly paying around £150,000 to secure the 26-year-old's signature ahead of his contract expiring in the summer – before loaning him back to the Dons.

The big day of the window was Thursday, January 25 though, when the names of three players from the German leagues were soon topping the online searches for the Norfolk area.

Cuban winger Onel Hernandez was the first to arrive, in a deal reportedly worth up to £1.7m with second tier club Eintracht Braunschweig.

German striker Dennis Srbeny was just a couple of hours behind, the top scorer for third tier leaders SC Paderborn joining in a deal reportedly worth up to £1.3m.

The triple swoop was then completed with the loan arrival of former Germany U21 international and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Moritz Leitner from Bundesliga side Augsburg.

While it was clear that would mean the majority of business was done for sporting director Stuart Webber and head coach Daniel Farke, there were still a few deals to emerge.

Talented playmaker Todd Cantwell – fresh from making his first-team debut at Chelsea in the FA Cup – joined Dutch second tier title chasers Fortuna Sittard on January 28.

Left-back Harry Toffolo overcame a broken foot to earn a permanent deal at Millwall until the end of the season, with the 22-year-old's exit leaving just two of the 2013 FA Youth Cup winners on the books at Carrow Road.

January 30 saw U23s defender Joe Crowe sign for Northern Irish Premier Division champions Linfield, returning home to Belfast ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.

Deadline day proved to be a quiet one for the Canaries though, with academy product Glenn Middleton joining Glasgow giants Rangers for an undisclosed fee, with a sell-on clause included in the deal for the Scotland U19 international.

In total it meant six arrivals and 18 exits but the overall figure of 24 doesn't quite match last summer's meaty turnover of 41 deals, when the club's transition was given a jump-start that supporters will never forget.
