Greek midfielder Savvas Mourgos could step up his injury comeback for Norwich City Under-23s in Lancashire this evening.

The 19-year-old came on in the 76th minute of Monday's 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Carrow Road, in the Premier League Cup group stages, to begin his return following ankle surgery in October.

Signed last summer after being released by Arsenal, the youngster could feature against Blackburn Rovers U23s tonight, at the Leyland County Ground, in Premier League Two (7pm).

'Really chuffed with Sav, one of the hardest working lads I've seen in rehab,' Canaries U23s head coach Matt Gill said. 'Jay (Eastoe-Smith) the fitness coach and Chris (Hedges) the physio have said he's been a joy to work with.

'Really pleased to see him back in the team because he was in such a good place, it was probably his best performance against Southampton (a 3-0 home win) when he did his ankle, in one of the team's best performances.

'So really pleased to have him back, we were desperate to get him some minutes on the pitch and chuffed to have him back, he's a really well liked lad in the dressing room, so it's good for everyone.'

With U23s captain Adam Phillips – a summer signing after being released by Liverpool – now out on loan in League Two with Camabridge United for the rest of the season, the return of Mourgos should help bolster central midfield.

'We've got boys underneath, Alfie Payne, will be looking for an opportunity,' added Gill, whose team are unbeaten in six games. 'He would have been here, a local lad, from Ringland, so desperate to try and get Alfie involved – and that's really how the conveyor belt needs to be.

'Lads step up to the first-team dressing room, other lads step up. Lads go out on loan, other boys step up and get their opportunity. So that's really the way that the ball is rolling now with the academy, everyone can see it.

'Boys out on loan, boys in the first-team squad and everyone else is bubbling under, desperate to be a part of it, so there's some real forward momentum at the moment, so that's good.'
