Daniel Farke's description of Russell Martin as a Norwich City 'idol' raised a few eyebrows.
For some, the veteran defender is an icon for failure after last season when the Canaries went from promotion favourites to Championship also-rans.
This was perhaps not the fault of Martin who, as skipper, had a responsibility to front up and explain the no-shows of his team-mates at places like Brighton and Rotherham to name just a couple.
When Stuart Webber arrived as sporting director, new broom tucked under his arm, Martin was expected to be one of the casualties of the new regime.
But even in his short time at Carrow Road, Webber has demonstrated a shrewdness that had been lacking in a football sense prior to his arrival.
Had Webber got rid of Martin as well then few supporters would have complained. It would have been said that yes, he's been a great servant but it was time for a fresh start. It might have also earned Webber a few more brownie points amongst those desperate to see change for change's sake.
However, the new era under the former Huddersfield man and Farke will still have Martin at its hub and there is a comfort in the Scotland international agreeing to stay at Carrow Road.

You can have all the young and hungry players you want but if you haven't got that bit of experience to bring it all together then the chemistry for a promotion charge isn't quite right.
With so much change there does need to be an element of continuity and Martin offers that. From an outsider point of view you get the impression Martin will be the man new recruits look to for advice about the club and how things are done at Colney.
It should also not be forgotten that Martin can also play a bit. His days as a marauding right back are behind him and his conversion to centre half brings a groan amongst some supporters.
But with the right partner(s) next to him Martin has proved to be as assured on the pitch as he is off it. Martin will know as well as anyone that the bench awaits if he falls below those standards even if he is now part of the club's fabric.
An 'idol', no less.
