Farke revealed on Friday afternoon, at his pre-match press call ahead of Sheffield United's Championship visit, he is not happy with the Welsh international's recent form or attitude in training.

Watkins missed both the league win at Bristol City and the midweek FA Cup exit at Chelsea, with Farke opting not to include him in his plans.

'To be honest, I was not content with recent performances or his performance on the training pitch,' said Farke. 'We had a really honest conversation about this in the last days and it is upto him to improve his performances on the training pitch and the games. He understands the message and now it is upto him to show he is ready.

'For his potential, he is a really good player but he can play better than he showed in recent weeks. It is upto him to work hard and show me on the training pitch he wants to be back in the team. He will then have all the chances. We support all the players and bring them to the door, but they must go through it.'

Farke confirmed he had no fresh injury concerns from the midweek penalty shoot out defeat at Chelsea, but Tottenham loan recruit Marcus Edwards has a slight back problem and will not be involved against the Blades.

'He came with some back problems,' said Farke. 'He trained with us, but he's not 100pc comfortable because of his back. I was thinking of bringing him into the squad, but because he's not 100pc comfortable we won't involve him.

'Without a midweek game for a while we have time to make sure he's at 100pc before bringing him into the squad.'

Tom Trybull (back) is also still out but Matt Jarvis is targeting a return from knee and ankle injuries in the next fortnight.

'I've been told he's close to returning to team training, perhaps in two weeks,' said Farke. 'He's been away for a long time, so having him back it will feel like a new addition.

'It's looking good at the moment but we'll have to see how his body responds. He was with us for one or two weeks in pre-season and he showed he was a smart, technical player and fitted our way of playing.

'We'll be really happy if he can return, but we have to be really careful because he's been away for such a long time.'

Steven Naismith, Russell Martin and Cameron Jerome left the club in recent days - Naismith and Martin securing loan moves to Scotland with Jerome joining Derby - and Farke can expect to be pressed for the latest on City's plans to bring in replacements.
