Norwich City legend Ian Culverhouse begins his reign as King's Lynn Town manager against the Canaries today – the Canaries of Hitchin Town, that is.

Following a whirlwind week which saw the Linnets draw 0-0 at Cambridge City on Monday, Gary Setchell sacked on Tuesday and Culverhouse appointed on Wednesday, there will be plenty of interest in the encounter.

The former Norwich and Aston Villa assistant manager is well aware that third-placed Hitchin are likely to provide him a baptism of fire though, as the Hertfordshire side have not been beaten at home in the Southern Premier Division this season.

'I've done a lot of scouting for Dagenham and I've watched Hitchin on a couple of occasions and they're a very, very good side, lots of mobility within the team,' Culverhouse said, having left his role as assistant at Dagenham & Redbridge in midweek.

'So we're going to have to be at our game, which I'm sure the boys will be. They've played very well against the top teams this year so it's another test for us but I'm sure the boys will stand up to it.'

He will be without player-coach Lee Stevenson and midfielder Dan Quigley though, as the club confirmed yesterday that both have left the club following the exit of long-serving Setchell.

With just 11 matches of the season left to play, the club could well be in for a busier time off the pitch than on it as Culverhouse gets started on building the club in his image.

However, the former Norwich and Swindon right-back appreciates promotion to step two of the non-league pyramid will be difficult.

'It's not easy, it's not easy to get promotion from any league,' he continued. 'It's going to be a lot of hard work and a lot of hours put in and it will be a summer that's coming up of working really hard and making sure when the season is here, we're ready for it.

'I think King's Lynn had a slow start this year so we've got to rectify that and ensure that the pieces are in place. It's going to be hard, we won't win every game but we will go into every game looking to win and we will play on the front foot and with a lot of energy.

'With the players already here and what we can bring in, it's really important that we challenge.'
