Momentum is the key word for Jolyon Parlmer as the Isport racer aims to build on his GP2 win in Monaco with a strong effort in Spain.

The Carleton-Rode team picked up their first victory of the 2012 campaign with a sprint race win around Monte Carlo at the end of May – and now Palmer wants more of the same as the Formula One feeder series follows its big brother to Spain for the European Grand Prix.

Valencia Street Circuit gave Palmer his joint-best result of 2011 with a ninth place in his rookie season – and he hopes the track will be good to him again.

'I'm looking forward to Valencia,' said the 21-year-old. 'It was one of my better results last year and I hope to keep the momentum going after Monaco.

'Unlike Monaco, it's a street circuit with plenty of overtaking opportunities and big run-offs. As always, the most important thing for us will be a good qualifying and start as our race pace has been good everywhere so far.

'My target is another podium but at least a good haul of points to move up a few places in the championship.'

Palmer's team-mate Marcus Ericsson took a useful second in the Monaco feature race and will be aiming to stay above his charging Isport colleague in the drivers' standings through the weekend.

Hingham's Caterham Racing will hope Giedo van der Garde can build on his double podium in Monaco as the Dutchman looks to close the gap of the two drivers above him in the standings – Luiz Razia and leader Davide Valsecchi, along with team-mate Rodolfo Gonzalez who took his first points of the season in the principality.

Lotus GP pair James Calado and Esteban Gutirrez had a poor weekend by their standards on the Mediterranean coast, but with the Hethel-backed outfit running second in the team standings they will be hoping to close on Dams.

Saturday sees the 30-lap feature race in Valencia, while Sunday is a 23-lap sprint race.
