There is one team in the British Superbike paddock who really are the heroes – not because they are winning races, but because they are all ex-servicemen who have been severely injured.

Their injuries range from amputated limbs to loss of hearing, so every race is a victory for them.

This year the unique injured serviceman's team, True Heroes Racing, have recruited ex-Marine Mark Fincham, from King's Lynn, to ride in the Superstock 1000 championship.

Fincham, who has had his left leg amputated, will be taking part in his first full season in the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship.

True Heroes Racing was set up in 2012 by a serving Royal Navy Warrant Officer to offer unique opportunities for Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) UK service personnel and veterans to become directly involved in competitive motorcycle racing as a way of regaining a focus and sense of direction during and after their rehabilitation.

True Heroes Racing enables injured riders to race specially adapted motorcycles, modified and maintained by injured mechanics.

Team manager Phil Spencer said: 'The organisation also invites and hosts members of the Armed Forces, from local rehabilitation units and military establishments, to join them as their guests, track-side.

'This outlet provides rehabilitation support to WIS personnel, enabling them to spend a day away from the ward and get up close to the motorcycles, experience what is still possible and enjoy the high-octane, adrenaline-fuelled world of superbike racing.'

Mark and the True Heroes Racing team are working hard in preparation for this weekend's race event at Brands Hatch, after leaving the opening round two weeks ago with a rather broken motorcycle after he crashed out of the Sunday race at Donington.

Morello Racing's Danny Buchan will be aiming to add to his Superstock 1000 championship lead this weekend and the RAF Regular and Reserves Team from RAF Marham will also have Jake Dixon looking for more points scoring Superbike rides while Jordan Weaving will be hoping to get his season under way.
