A mop-up operation is underway after a thunder and lightning storm left a trail of destruction across North Norfolk.

Hundreds of homes were left without power after a power line was brought down in Norwich Road, Roughton, on Tuesday afternoon.

Torrential rain also caused hazardous conditions on the road for motorists.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service revealed it received more than a dozen reports of flooding in Cromer alone in just half an hour. Overstrand and Northrepps were also affected.

In Cromer, Station Road, Norwich Road, New Parade and Cliff Avenue were among the streets worst hit. Firefighters also assisted in unblocking drains to clear flood water on the promenade next to Cromer Pier.

Eyewitness Glynis Caris added: 'Cromwell Road was so bad it took the manhole cover up. We are in Oliver Court, it's flooded here so let's hope it goes down soon.

In Roughton, an appliance from Sheringham attended Norwich Road to cables down in the road.

According to rail operator Greater Anglia, disruption on the Bittern Line was expected to continue into the evening.

The train company said: 'Due to lightning damaging the signalling system at North Walsham some lines are blocked. A rail replacement bus service will run between Cromer and Norwich.'

A spokesperson for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: 'As a result of heavy rain, the fire service received 13 calls about flooding in Cromer between 3.30pm and 4pm this afternoon. An officer is in the area and has been assessing the situation at various locations around the town but currently the only incident where help is needed is at a residential property in Norwich Road where a fire engine and crew is currently using a low level pump.'
