Andy Stonach, 53, and Kari Barnes, 33, found themselves treading water early on Monday after a sudden deluge poured into their home in Hythe Road, Methwold.

The couple, who have both just left teaching posts at Iceni Academy in Methwold, were awoken just before 4am by banging at the door.

'At first I thought it was people from the local pub making noise and went down to see what was going on,' said Mr Stonach.

'When I got down there I stepped into about four inches of water and it was gushing in. It was my neighbour at the door, shouting 'do not open your door, whatever you do'.'

The fire service was called to help pump out the water, which was full of silt.

'The house is about 300 years old and none of the floors are level so it was working its way through the house,' he said.

'We stood there for 10 or 15 minutes thinking of what we should do. Eventually we called 999 and the fire service were there in 20 minutes and were brilliant,' he said.

Mr Stonach said he was woken in the middle of the night to hear thunder overhead before his neighbour's call.

He said the worst damage was from the silt, but that water had also got into the slate-tiled floor.

After 14 hours of bailing out water on Monday, fans and de-humidifiers will be used for a week to dry the rooms out.
