Time Team's Carenza Lewis has teamed up with students to research the history of Walberswick.

Dr Lewis, part of Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACA), held a two-day Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) in Walberswick with 39 Year 9 and Year 10 students from Sir John Leman High School in Beccles, Bungay High School and Alde Valley School.

The students worked in small groups to carry out the excavation of test pits in gardens in the village, and were guided by professional archaeologists from the ACA team.

HEFA aims to boost participants' confidence and capacity for learning, to help them fulfil their academic potential, and to raise their educational aspirations regarding applying to university.

Dr Lewis said: 'The sites have never been dug before.

'It's genuine research, we don't know what we're going to find. The research will make us able to map which bits of the landscape came into the village at what time.

'We're hoping to find the tracks of people's lives in the past.'

She also said that places like Walberswick would have been much busier in the pre-railway era as it was close to the sea.

Today, the students are visiting Cambridge University to map the findings from the digs.
