Turkeys may not vote for Christmas. But one might just feel like it has topped the polls.

The bird - unsurprisingly now named Lucky - has escaped the Christmas table, and has now taken up residence at a Norfolk pub.

She owes her freedom to a passing remark by Lizzie Brake, the vegetarian landlady of the Dickleburgh Crown, near Diss, who mentioned her butcher, Michael Wilby, that she would like to rescue a turkey.

She thought little more of it until, days later, Mr Wilby arrived in the pub with a bird under his arm.

'People in the pub thought it was hilarious. He named her Lucky when he brought her in. We had the conversation a little while ago and it was a throw away comment, but Michael took it at face value.'

The 10 month old Norfolk Black has since become a star attraction at the pub. 'She's made guest appearances in the pub and she's been popular. She's very friendly and I think she's quite cute,' Miss Brake, 34, added.

'Michael chose Lucky because she was getting bullied and pecked by the other turkeys.

Mr Wilby, who owns the Rushall Farm Shop, said it started as a practical joke and he took pity on the turkey.

He said: 'She's a vegetarian so we always have a bit of banter. I normally give the pubs I supply their Christmas dinner but I couldn't give her a bag of vegetables.'

Miss Brake is now planning to get another bird to keep Lucky company.

'They live up to ten years so I will be having her for a long time,' she added.
