A pupil at a Norwich school who was seriously injured during a PE lesson a week ago has died.

The student, who was in year eight at Taverham High School, fell from a pommel horse at the Beech Road site last Tuesday.

This morning, students were told the girl had now passed away.

Ron Munson, headteacher at the school, paid tribute to the 'sunny' pupil who was being treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

He said: 'It was with great sadness this morning that we told students and staff the heartbreaking news of the death of one of our year eight pupils. Everybody is deeply saddened and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this terribly difficult time.

'She was a sunny girl and a bright student who worked hard, played a full part in our school community and could often be seen around the school, getting involved in whatever was going on, and always smiling. She was a big part of our school and we are all deeply affected by her loss.'

The pupil, who has not been named, passed away at about 3.45pm yesterday, a spokesman at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge said.

Both staff and students are now being offered support to help them come to terms with what has happened.

Mr Munson said that support would continue over the coming weeks and months and they would be given 'every opportunity to share their memories of their friend if they want to do so'.

Norfolk County Council's critical incident team is at the school.

The authority has also informed the Health and Safety Executive of the pupil's death. The HSE has already visited the school and an investigation is underway.

Mr Munson added: 'Police are also investigating the circumstances surround the pupil's death on behalf of the coroner and we are assisting in whatever way we can. An inquest will be held in due course.'
